Judith Berger, a girl growing up in a well-to-do Jewish family in Vienna has a sweetheart, Anton Kermauner. During Hitlers rise to power, their fates are controlled by events that shake the world. Judith loses her home and her parents. Anton joins the Hitler Youth and loses his soul. When Judith returns to the university in Vienna after the war, having escaped to Ireland and then America, she hopes to reestablish her former life and identity. She finds her childhood friends, reconnects with Anton, but finds that she is unable to forget the familys fate. Anton finds it much easier--and more convenient--to forget his war experience as a soldier at Auschwitz. They both understand, sadly, that nothing has changed in Viennas feelings toward its Jewish population.
